This is a two-acre market garden on the grounds of the Hewett School. The same team that operates the CSA will grow a year-round supply of seasonal vegetables and salads. These will be used in the school's canteen, and we are also approaching local primary schools etc to see if they are interested in selling the produce for example through weekly playground markets.
Besides providing a supply of healthy local produce, another key aim of the project is to introduce students at the school, and the wider community, to commercial horticulture and especially to market gardening. Market gardens were widespread until about the 1960s and '70s, and earlier still what is now the Tuckswood estate was a market gardening area. We suspect that market gardens (that is, plots of a few acres producing a wide range of vegetables) will return as an important aspect of our future food supply.
The project is only possible through the collaboration of the school's management team, teaching staff, catering contractor, Extended Schools co-ordinator, Tycoon project and grounds contractor. We need to extend this support group to include people from the communities surrounding the school.
